My role as Technical Director is to make reality out of the dreams of the designer and director. I like to be present from the earliest conversations, to better understand where the dreams come from; even if some element proves too costly or complex for the shop that needs to build it, a new solution may be found that meets the same need.
Technical direction includes engineering for safety and durability, as well as managing effective budgets and schedules. The company needs to know when to expect the set & lights to arrive in a complete state, and the administration needs to have confidence that the budgets will be met. That’s a wide range of skills, and works best in a team setting, with cooperative relationships, excellent communication and a system of checks and balances. I work to develop that sort of work environment wherever I fit in the team.
